Psalm 8:3-4
Good morning, Hopewell!
I hope you’re having a fantastic week!
Today’s Scripture passage is Psalm 8 verses 3-4. Your devotional calendar gives an excerpt of these two verses, but I’d like to read the verses in their entirety. This passage reads “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place, what is mankind that You are mindful of them, human beings that You care for them?”
According to Max Lucado, “The loss of mystery has led to the loss of majesty.” When I read this, I was reminded of when my children were preschoolers. Oh, how I loved seeing their eyes light up when they saw something new - an animal they’d never seen before, a beautiful flower, a sparkly rock, a train speeding by. These were things that were “old news” to me, but to them, they were simply amazing and fascinating. As I watched my children, I began to be excited by these things as well. Viewing the world through their eyes rekindled a sense of awe for me that had been lost to the drudgery of the mundane day-to-day “been there, done that”.
Our focal passage starts out “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers”. A few nights ago, my husband, daughter, and I attended a fall festival. When we arrived back home, it was quite dark outside, and I noticed that the sky appeared to be glowing a slight pink color. Were we experiencing a faint aurora? I did what any nerdy shutterbug would do and started taking long-exposure shots to make sure I was really seeing what I thought I was seeing. Sure enough - there were pink streaks in the pictures! Not only did I catch the aurora, but I also accidentally got a shot of the Milky Way. The Milky Way is massive - containing billions of stars - but we are tiny specks in that galaxy! However, God knows each of us by name. Luke 12:7 tells us that “even the very hairs on our heads are numbered.” God knows each of us. He knows our struggles, our fears, our pain. He also knows our strengths, our delights, and our hopes. We can trust Him to love and care for us!
Let’s pray together.
Heavenly Father, I am constantly amazed at Your creation. From the tiniest of creatures, to the fragrant flowers, to the way the leaves change colors in the fall, and then to view the enormity of space - I am amazed that You have such a vastness to care for but still know each of us down to the tiniest detail. Thank You that You love and care for us! Help us to keep a child-like wonder of the world You created. In Jesus’ Name - Amen.
I hope you’re having a fantastic week!
